A Psychoanalytic Approach on Chang-Sup Sohn¡¯s Three Short Stories
Cho Doo-Young

Abstract
Most criticism on the early works of Chang-Sup Sohn have focused on the motif of the cry of a patient, psychopath, prisoner, or marginal man. In earlier papers, the author of this article had also discussed the motive of Sohn¡¯s works as unresolved frustration and conflict resulting from early childhood trauma and still strongly working in the unconscious. This study, however, which analyzes Sohn¡¯s three short stories, has found that these three works are different from the others works in that "healthy psychopathology" is working as the motive of writing. Some critics have argued that "The Lonely Hero", "Smile", and "The Will of Weeds", which were written before "The Surplus Man", already show the trace of healthy psychopathology. On the other hand, this paper is a study two other stories which are generally regarded as ¡¯unhealthy¡¯, along with the "The Surplus Man". This study first analyzes the psychology of the hero of "The Lost Dream", whom many critics have found "psychopathic." The hero develops from dependence to independence, and outgrows masochism and this paper proposes that overcoming sexual temptation plays an essential role in this development. The motive for writing may be inferred to be Sohn¡¯s psychology in accepting his wife¡¯s love for him. The second story, "Journey in the Snow", mainly deals with the intrapsychic conflicts between the hero¡¯s superego and id. The motive for writing here is the author¡¯s paternal love toward the children he left in Japan. "The Surplus Man" is a story about the conflict between two heroes who represent ego-ideal and superego proper, respectively. This paper contends that the clue to the author¡¯s motive in this story is the wish to meet his mother who deserted him as a child.
